OpenAI Enhances AI Voice Assistant for a More Natural Conversation

OpenAI has just released an update for Advanced Voice Mode, the AI voice feature in ChatGPT that enables real-time interaction with users. This update aims to make the AI assistant more responsive and reduce its tendency to interrupt users while they speak.

Manuka Stratta, a post-training researcher at OpenAI, announced the update through a video posted on the company’s official social media channels.

One of the key improvements in this update is addressing a common issue with AI voice assistants, which often interrupt users when they pause to think or take a breath.

Now, free ChatGPT users can enjoy the latest version of Advanced Voice Mode, allowing them to speak without worrying about interruptions. Meanwhile, paid subscribers (Plus, Teams, Edu, Business, and Pro) will also experience a smoother interaction, with fewer interruptions and an enhanced voice assistant personality.

According to an OpenAI spokesperson in an interview with TechCrunch, the AI voice assistant for paid users is now more accurate, engaging, concise, specific, and creative in providing responses.

This update comes amid intense competition in the AI voice assistant industry.

Sesame, a startup founded by Brendan Iribe, co-founder of Oculus, and backed by Andreessen Horowitz, recently gained attention for its Maya and Miles AI voice assistants, known for their natural speech. Meanwhile, major players like Amazon are also preparing to launch the latest version of Alexa, powered by large language models (LLM), to compete in this growing market.
